Bikes of Across Andes 2023

18 November, 2023

In this edition of Across Andes, riders head further south than ever before to take in some of Chilean Patagonia’s most iconic gravel roads. Notorious amongst cycle-tourists in South America, the Carretera Austral is the chosen route when riding the length of the Andes due to its vistas and varying landscapes.

Riders' bikes were weighed at the registration earlier today and we can confirm the heaviest bike totals 22kg, whereas the lightest is Isidora Solari at a mere 13.75kg (without water). Only 500g heavier was Juliet Elliott's bike, also dry.

While most of Chile is littered with tiendas and minimercados making resupply relatively easy and reliable, this isn’t so true of the remote Carretera Austral and the offshoots riders will be tackling, especially out of high season. They will need to restock plentifully wherever possible. The forecast is so bleak they should have enough space for food as they’ll be wearing most of their warm and waterproof gear at all times! Riders could be forgiven for hoping for warm weather to wrap up their northern hemisphere season or some sunshine if coming out of a southern hemisphere’s winter training, but the forecast is not looking kind to our riders; heavy rain, cold wind and unseasonably low temperatures during the day and night are predicted.

The outdoor shops of Coyhaique have been raided for their winter gloves, towels and waterproof socks which have been converted into winter overshoes. It’s unlikely anything that gets wet during the race is going to dry out, except for next to a fire in a hostel. The weather has altered many riders’ kit lists and a few race plans.

Our very own Beccy Waters will be following the race from the ground so be sure to follow along as she brings the dots to life at our commentary here.
